Paediatric Osteopathy

Osteopathy for Your Baby

Supporting a happy, healthy start in life.

At our clinic, we provide nurturing, expert care to help your little one thrive. Whether you’re here for a specific concern or just want a peace of mind check-up, our goal is to ensure your baby moves and develops with ease.

Why see a Paediatric Osteopath?

Babies aren’t just small adults, their bodies are unique. Did you know they are born without bony kneecaps? Their patella is actually soft cartilage until they are about 3–5 years old!

Because their bones and joints are so pliable, our approach is incredibly gentle. We use light-touch techniques (often called Cranial Osteopathy) that work with your baby's natural breathing. There is:

  • NO cracking or manipulation.

  • NO heavy stretching.

  • Just gentle pressure. (Although there might be some crying, often babies find it so relaxing that they fall asleep during the session)

Common Reasons Parents Visit Us

Many families come to see us to identify the why behind their baby's discomfort. Common reasons include:

  • Postural Preferences:

    • Baby always faces one way (torticollis) or prefers one side for feeding.

  • Head Shape Concerns:

    • Flat spots (plagiocephaly) or moulding from a forceps/suction delivery.

  • Feeding Struggles:

    • Difficulty latching, tongue-tie tension, or preferring one side

  • Digestion:

    • Excessive wind, reflux, or scrunching up in discomfort.

  • Post-Release Support:

    • Tongue or lip tie released, jaw and mouth mechanics.

  • Unsettled Behaviour:

    • Difficulty settling, staying asleep, or screaming in the car seat.

  • Movement Milestones:

    • Support with tummy time, rolling, crawling, or walking.

  • Physical Concerns:

    • Clicking joints (hips), turned-in feet (talipes), stiff limbs, blocked tear ducts or recurrent congestion.

The Impact of Birth & Pregnancy

Birth is a massive physical event. Whether it was a quick labour, a long delivery, or a C-section, the pressure of being born can leave babies with lingering physical tension.

Sometimes, this starts before birth if a baby was a bit squashed or held in a cramped position in the womb, it’s getting stuck in a cramped yoga pose before they were even born! These forces can affect how a baby's soft skeleton settles, leading to stiffness or discomfort. By gently easing this tension early on, we help your child move and function with greater ease as they grow.

“We love working with babies!
It's so fulfilling to help babies resolve those early birth stresses. Seeing them become peaceful and settled allows them (and the whole family) to truly enjoy these first precious months.”

What to Expect at our Clinic

Our treatment room is a calm, family-friendly space where siblings and grandparents are always welcome! We work entirely at your baby’s pace. If they need a break for a cuddle or a feed, we simply pause.

By gently addressing these early strain patterns, we help your child grow, move, and function with greater ease.

After the Treatment

Most babies leave feeling very relaxed, and it is common for them to fall into a deep sleep shortly after. As their body adjusts, you might notice:

  • Improved Comfort:

    • They may settle more easily for tummy time or in their car seat.

  • Feeding Changes:

    • Their latch may feel easier or more symmetrical.

  • A Short Adjustment:

    • Occasionally, a baby might be a little tired or fidgety for 24–48 hours as they find their new balance.

We believe in treating as little as possible by empowering you with tools to use at home.

We are always just a phone call away if you have follow-up questions.

How We Support You & Your Baby

We don't just treat babies; we support the mechanics of feeding to ensure it isn't a stressful or painful experience for you or your baby.

  • Breastfeeding Support:

    • We assess your baby’s jaw and neck mobility to ensure a deep, comfortable latch.

  • Bottle Feeding & Transitions:

    • If your baby is refusing a bottle or struggling with the transition, we check their tongue and jaw movement to ensure they can create an effective seal on the teat.

  • Improving Milk Flow:

    • For mums, we don't just treat the breast; we work on the ribcage and mid-back.

Releasing tension here can help your body relax, which is essential for a healthy

let-down reflex and better milk flow.

  • Comfortable Positions:

    • We can suggest different feeding postures that take the pressure off your

sore spots and help your baby drain the breast more effectively, which is a key

step in preventing and managing mastitis.

  • Mastitis Care:

    • If you’re struggling with blockages, we use gentle techniques on your chest and

ribs to improve drainage and milk flow.

  • A Team Approach:

    • We often work alongside GPs and Lactation Consultants to ensure you have the most comprehensive care.
